YHP Interviews Young millionaire Cameron Johnson- Author, Businessman, Entrepreneur and Internationally Recognized Public Speaker.

YHP Interviews Young millionaire Cameron Johnson- Author, Businessman, Entrepreneur and Internationally Recognized Public Speaker.

Cameron has been featured in hundreds of newspapers, magazines, and television stations worldwide including Newsweek, Business Week, USA Today, The New York Times, Time Magazine, The Oprah Winfrey Show, MSNBC, CNBC, ABC, and dozens in Japan as well.

Hey Cameron, thanks for the opportunity, Welcome to YHP, I’m sure the readers are excited about this interview; you’re such an inspirational figure to entrepreneurs all over the world.
pic.php

I have too much to ask you, so I will make it as brief as possible.

You’re an author, businessman, entrepreneur, internationally recognized public speaker; I could just go on, how does it feel to have accomplished so much at such a young age?

Thank you, that’s very flattering. For me, I’m more focused on “what’s next” versus something I did years ago – but thank you, it’s been quite the journey and that’s how it’s supposed to be.

You started your first business at the age of nine, at age 12; Cameron made $50,000 selling Beanie Babies over the Internet.

You made your first million before graduating high school, when your company was generating $15,000 per day, how was the feeling? What did you friends say?

I’ve always lived two lives: my personal life, and my business life. I’ve tried to keep both very separate and although the media attention doesn’t always make that easy, it’s important for me to keep them separate. So in one moment I may be in an important business meeting or on television, and an hour later – I might be an average 24-year-old at a concert or football game with friends.

Out of all your books, which one would you say has been your most successful?
cameron-johnson
By far, You Call the Shots, which was released here in 2007, was a very proud accomplishment for me. It really brought all of my experiences, and the lessons I learned along the way, full-circle and enabled me to share it with others. It’s always exciting to receive emails – even today – from people who are reading, or have read the book, from anywhere around the world.

Tell us more

Fantastic – it’s won several awards in different countries including an award for innovation from the Taiwan government in 2008. Next, it’ll be released in Japan sometime next year and several colleges and universities across America have adopted it for their business classes.

Describe your experience being a finalist on Oprah Winfrey’s first prime time series, The Big Give, which was aired on ABC?
ME/WHIZKID
It was a great honour to be chosen as one of the 10 contestants but even more exciting to have made it through every episode and to have hopefully helped change many peoples’ lives for the better. Oprah’s mission to inspire others to give is a fantastic one and she is certainly someone I admire for her business acumen.

Describe your experience hosting the Season 4 of Beat the Boss?

If you look at all of my experiences, they are each very different. Hosting a television show (aired only in the UK) was quite fun. Television is definitely a fun hobby for me and I use it to create a platform that’s enabled me to help promote different charitable causes, financial literacy, etc.

What is your most memorable experience so far?

My Japan consulting experience when I was 15 would definitely stand out, as would Oprah’s Big Give, and all of my experiences are so very different – that’s what keeps it exciting.

What has allowed you to grow to such a large business while at the same time retaining an excellent reputation for service?

It comes back to how you want to be treated. Go fly on US Airways and you’ll know what not to do. It’s about customer service and the experience you’re giving your customers. Order a pair of shoes from Zappos and you’ll experience something fantastic. You have to create experiences that encourage your customers to tell their friends – and rave about your business. Being “good” isn’t good enough anymore.

Do you have any suggestions for coping with set-backs, negative experiences?

Sure, learn from them, then ignore them and push forward.

Do you have any favourite business related books that you can recommend to other entrepreneurs?

For me it’s business biographies – so as a kid, I’d read books by Donald Trump, Michael Dell, Bill Gates, Richard Branson, etc. Spending $15 on a book is the best way to get an education.

Out of all the entrepreneurs, authors, inspiration speakers that you’ve met, who has been your favourite?

Wow, that’s a tough one. I try and learn from everyone’s experiences and advice. We are all students.

How do you balance your time between doing so much?

Google Calendar synced w/ my Blackberry.

What are the 5 qualities you think every entrepreneur should possess?

  • Not afraid to put yourself out there,
  • Be naive as to what can/can’t be done,
  • Persistent,
  • Creative to bootstrap your marketing,
  • Passionate.

What is your definition of success?

Happiness

You are one of the most famous Young Entrepreneurs in the world today- based on your experiences, what advice would you give to a Young Entrepreneur starting their first business today?

In my book, You Call the Shots, it’s broken down into 19 chapters I call the “essential secrets of entrepreneurship.” The first one is “Put Yourself Out There” and the second is “Start Small” – those two principles are the keys for getting started.

What are your thoughts on the recession?

It’s a correction.

So what’s next for you?

I’ve spent my time deciding what the next step should be and I’m glad I have. It’s much better than taking a year doing something I hate.

Thanks Cameron.

YHP Interviews, Mr Andrew Galasetti-founder of the Blogzine, Lyved

YHP Interviews, Mr Andrew Galasetti-founder of the Blogzine, Lyved

Mr Andrew is a young entrepreneur, also the founder of the Blogzine, Lyved. An inspirational blogger site for people at all ages. Andrew presents his struggles and downfall in life as his stepping stone to success. An early business with the outcomes looking blissful as it attracts over 240,000 unique visitors around the Globe. Such signs are good for the future, as it encourages Andrew to pursue his dreams.

Andrew, welcome to YHP…How are you doing?
pic.php

How did you come up with the funkified title, “Lyved”?

Well my aim with the site is to have readers be inspired and implement the ideas and tips we provided and by doing so have them look back and feel that they have lived life. Now lived.com was not an available domain so I switched things up a bit and through in a “y.”

How did you start such a “Blogzine”?

It was very simple. I purchased a domain name, some hosting, and used wordpress to power the site. Growing a blogzine is the hard part.

Why did you choose to dwell on giving advice and inspirational thoughts?

It’s an interesting approach from a youngster as yourself.

I felt that there was a lot of negativity out there and I wanted to counteract it and restore hope for a lot of people.
What are your aims regarding Lyved?

I want to turn it into a multi-author blog much like HuffingtonPost.com and inspire millions more people.

Where do you see Lyved going in the next five years?
Lyved-Logo

In five years I see its audience and influence growing drastically. I know that it will be mentioned more in mainstream media and cover many more topics from unique voices from around the globe.

Everything in life has it advantages, and disadvantages. What are yours regarding this business?

The advantages definitely outweigh the disadvantages. Lyved has brought me so many opportunities to move into different industries and I’ve been able to meet so many amazing people. There are many more advantages and some I don’t even know about yet.

The only really big disadvantage to running Lyved is that I often have to write the articles, maintain the backend of the site (databases, software, etc) and also promote the site at the same time. Most of the time I’d rather just focus on my writing.

Your past, your life, your drawbacks are shown to have made you what are you are this day. What are your words and actions to overcome such things?

I guess I’m a prime example for the saying; “everything happens for a reason.” When I was younger, I never understood why I had to grow up poor, without a father, sick, and learning disabled. However, now I’m so thankful I went through all of that.

If internet didn’t come to existent, how else do you think “Lyved” would have come to life?

Interesting question! Well, the essence of Lyved would have probably come through a book years down the road in my life. I always knew that I wanted to write a book that shared the lessons I learned from my struggles and successes. But thanks to the internet and Lyved, I’m actually working on the book now.

Maintaining such a site can be time consuming, however does it leave you with time for family and friends?

Along with Lyved, I work part-time at night as well so my time is very limited. However, I try my best to do most of the work on Lyved while my family is working as if it were a regular job. Family is extremely important to me so I make certain I make time.

Making a site requires some expertise knowledge, however is the necessity of education – a degree, an essential factor that any successful entrepreneur must obtain?

No, not at all. Not having a degree does not guarantee failure and having a degree does not guarantee success. However, knowledge is extremely important. You can learn in classroom, on your own through books, magazines, websites, and best of all you can learn through experience.

Do you have any advice for those who are seeking to be within the same position as yourself?

Adversity and persistence is vital. Adversity is there to block those who are committed enough to a goal and persistence is a key for someone wanting to overcome an adversity.

Any advice for anybody starting a business of any kind?
AndrewGalasetti
Don’t chase money! I did it for years and it always leads to a dead end.

Thank you for your time.

You’re welcome!

YHP Interviews Elliott Bisnow, Young entrepreneur- Co-Founder of Bisnow Media & Founder of Summit Series

YHP Interviews Elliott Bisnow, Young entrepreneur- Co-Founder of Bisnow Media & Founder of Summit Series

YHP had the opportunity of interviewing a young, exciting and a future leader in the world, Elliott Bisnow.

A young entrepreneur, only 23 years old and already creating a scene in the entrepreneurial world, Co-founder of Bisnow Media- a niche publishing business with about 30 employees, also Founder of Summit Series- Summit Series, A company he created to connect and inspire the world’s most influential young innovators, company founders.

Elliott is not all about making money, spending his time raising money for charities across the world with the likes of The United Nations Foundation, Clinton Foundation, Grassroots Soccer, Charity: Water, Invisible Children.

He also spends time travelling around the world (Already visited 44 countries), playing tennis and creating new businesses.
Definitely someone to look out for in the future or now really!!

Hello Elliot, it’s so nice to finally speak to you, welcome to YHP and how are you doing?

Elliott_1
What could you be doing if you weren’t doing this interview?

I’m living in Central America right now. I’m here from August until November and have been surfing every morning before I jump on conference calls and start working. It’s 7:53 AM and I’m just back from a 90 minute surfing session in Costa Rica.   I’m pretty happy to be relaxing now and answering questions.

Can you give us some background information about yourself?

I grew up in Washington DC and my focus growing up was on tennis. I would practice for 3 – 4 hours every day after school.  I was ranked as high as 37th in the United States and was able to get a tennis scholarship to the University of Wisconsin.  Now I’m 23 years old and focus on traveling, adventure sports and running two businesses.

Elliot, Can you give us some insight on what you do?

I co-own two companies. The first is called Bisnow Media and is a niche publishing business with about 30 employees. The goal of the company is to pick local business industries in different cities, which have no daily news- For example, the legal industry in Washington DC or commercial real estate in Chicago.  In each industry we bring on a reporter and send out free daily emails all about that industry. We also host tons of events/market conferences/etc. The business makes money from advertising, tickets to events and event sponsorships. I started this business with my dad 3 years ago when I was in my college dorm room.

The second company is called Summit Series. The goal of Summit Series is to create a community of the most amazing young people in the world.  There are so many young company founders, entrepreneurs, non-profit founders and well known figures and there is no home for these people. They generally don’t join most groups or go to traditional conferences which have an older demographic.  We’ve had hundreds of attendees in the past year including the co-founders, founders, presidents or Chief Executives of companies like Twitter, Zappos, CollegeHumor, Facebook, Youtube, Virgin Records, Mint.com, CAA, MTV, and Blackboard.

Elliot, what project are you working on at the moment,Can you give the YHP Readers some insight on this?

Summit Series just finished a Summit in NYC with President Clinton, which Russell Simmons hosted at his residence in the Financial District. We were able to raise $265,000 for the Clinton Foundation, and this money will be used to fight a number of global epidemics such as aids in Africa and childhood obesity in the United States.

Our next major Summit is in Miami from November 5th -8th.  We’ll have 250 of the leading company founders in the world. The average age of our attendees is 29 years old. There is some cool information on it here: http://summitseries.com/events/

Bisnow Media currently publishes in DC, NYC, NJ and CHI. We’re in the process of adding a few more cities in 2009.

Elliot, you’ve met some really cool people, Who has been your favourite so far?

We did a Summit at the White House in March and met a number of amazing young people working there.  One of them was Yosi Sergeant who worked with Shepard Fairey to create the Obama Hope Posters/Pins.  In less than a year, these two guys, Yosi and Shepard, created a global movement without any outside help and played a major role in the election of the President of the United States- that’s pretty awesome.

What has been your most memorable moment so far?

In 2009 there have been a lot: The White House Summit, going to China with my family and experiencing a new culture, presenting President Clinton with the Summit Series Catalyst Award, learning a new sport (surfing) in Costa Rica, moving to the West Village in NYC for three months and learning all about a new city, finally getting an Apple computer, and watching my brother try out for American Idol.

What are your hobbies away from work?

la-toms-event
Traveling and adventure sports are a huge hobby. I’ve been to 44 countries. I’m currently traveling for three months all around Central and South America, staying in a different country for 3 weeks at a time. I travel with 4 of my closest friends who all work with me. One person is our head of online, one person is our head of strategy, etc.

What inspired you to start a business?

When I was a freshman in college my Resident Advisor in my dorm, Anthony David Adams was printing  t-shirts.  I will take this moment to give Anthony a thank you and shout out! This was the first time I’d ever seen a young person have their own business. My mind was blown. From this moment on, I knew I had to start businesses.

How do you motivate yourself when things aren’t going so well?

As soon as you realize things aren’t going well you take a step back. You figure out what went wrong, what mistake did I make, why aren’t people buying my product, why is this person mad at me, etc. You figure out what went wrong and you dive back in.  You put aside your ego and you apologize if you are wrong. If people don’t buy your product then you and all your sales staff wake up two hours earlier and sell harder. Or you make the necessary changes to your product.

I would say that I make a couple small mistakes every day and a major mistake every week or two.  The world is a good place. People are good.  When you make a mistake and you realize it and you apologize second chances are given.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5-10 years?

I would like to create a large media company which publishes in the United States and Europe.  I’d like for Summit Series to host events on each major continent. But it’s hard for me to see out more than one year. Even 6 months is hard.   Things move so quickly. We did the White House event in less than a week. So to dream about years away is really hard for me.

Is it true you’re currently on course to raise more than $1 million for non profits in 2009?

We are on pace to directly raise more than $1 million this year for non profits.   It’s pretty amazing when I step back and think about this.  We’ve worked with great organizations like The United Nations Foundation, Clinton Foundation, Grassroots Soccer, Charity: Water, Invisible Children.

What was your reason for starting the summit series?

Summit Series started 18 months ago as a trip for young company founders. As soon as we realized there were thousands of young people who wanted to be part of something, we created a real organization. Our goal is to connect and inspire leading young people.

Not too long, you were invited to the white house, how was the experience?
whitehousepic

It was humbling. The opportunity came up quickly. And, to be given the chance to host a Summit at the White House was thrilling.  We had 35 attendees, each of whom ran large businesses: Tony Hsieh the CEO of Zappos, Jared Kushner the Owner/Publisher of the New York Observer, Evan Williams the CEO of Twitter, Ivanka Trump who runs Development and Acquisitions for the Trump Organization, Rob Speyer the Co-CEO of Tishman Speyer, Catherine Levene the COO of Daily Candy, Jessica Jackley the co-founder of Kiva.org.

You are only 23 years old, you’ve achieved so much. How did you become this successful?

Instead of writing business plans and day dreaming ideas, I just use the “Ready, Fire, Aim” technique. I put my ego aside and I just go. And, I have a tentative plan. But I accept that I’ll make mistakes along the way.  Mistakes are ok as long as you don’t make the same one twice.  The only way to build a big company is to move quickly and keep moving forward.  Learn by doing. And have fun. Don’t go to the office from 8AM- 8PM and put in a 50% effort all day because you’re wasting time.  When I work I go at 100% efficiency. And, we make it rain.

What advices would you give to young entrepreneurs out there?

Make it rain. No one will make things happen for you. Pick up the phone and make the hard phone calls, close deals yourself.  No one else makes it rain. You need to make the rain.

Thanks Elliott for your time.
