A new Monopoly inspired board game has made it’s way onto the UK market, aimed at the new generation looking to make a billion rather than a million. It will be released in the US this summer, when business students will have there chance to furiously defend there faux business empires. Here is a description of the game from The Economist.
THE most famous board game of them all, “Monopoly”, was launched during the Depression. This crisis may not produce anything quite as successful, but it has also spawned a crop of new financial games. “Billionaire Tycoon”, is one engaging example. You are an entrepreneur who has been wiped out by the crash; you win when you have £1 billion on hand through the strategic acquisition of cash-generating firms, starting with car washes and pet shops and building up to oil rigs and private banks. Along the way, you can bargain, trade, steal, borrow and even engineer military coups to gain businesses and outfox opponents. Its co-creator, Shameek Upadhya, says his entrepreneur friends like to play—as do, apparently, their children.
If you are on your way to becoming a billionaire tycoon then your probably not wasting your time playing this board game, but if your not then this a fun upgraded Monopoly. Not content with a house in Mayfair? Then how about investing in a casino in Switzerland.
Check out my interview with Matt Beilis as he talks about his journey so far, his college experience and what it is like trying to succeed as a music artist in new york.
Hi Matt, How are you doing? Its great to finally have you on YHP.
Thanks for having me.
Before we jump into the interview, could you quickly the YHP readers some background information about yourself?
I’m a singer songwriter and piano player. I play mostly pop / rock with a hint of R&B. You may have seen my YouTube videos!
So how did you get into music? what your story?
Well, I started playing piano when I was about 3 and a half. My parents had an old upright piano at home, and when I sat down at it, they said I touched it really lightly and carefully, so they thought I might have some innate talent. They took a chance and threw me right into piano lessons.
I ended up taking lessons for about 15 years. It wasn’t until later in high school, though, that I thought I’d try my hand at singing and writing songs (mostly because I thought it would get girls). I ended up falling in love with the process and the result so I haven’t stopped since.
So you graduated from columbia studying Industrial Engineering and Operations Research, how was the whole college experience? did you use it as an outlet for your music whilst studying?
The college experience was a lot of fun for me, but somewhat confusing goal-wise. Originally when I was applying to go to colleges, I thought to myself that I’d never want to major in music because then I’d have no outlet when I’m stressed with school work.
Not to mention, it would be incredibly hard to making a living from that . It ended up that while I was there, music was all I wanted to do. My major ended up evolving into a backup plan, rather than THE plan. I knew that I was meant to follow this dream.
So are you focusing on your music full-time at the moment?
I am focusing on my music more than full-time now. I’m really passionate about succeeding in music, and it’s the kind of “job” that never really feels like work anyway. My job is called “playing.”
So what are currently up to at the moment?
I’m focusing on writing and producing new music for my next album and also for other artists. I’m also writing a song with producer / DJ Justin Michael to be released on Ultra Records (DeadMau5, Tiesto) early next year.
How competitive is it trying to make a singer-songwriter in new york?
New York is probably the most competitive place to go into entertainment. Everyone here is an actor or musician. But, it’s also the best place to try to get seen as a musician. It’s kind of a catch-22. It definitely makes you step up your game.
Bruno Mars tweeted your cover of Just The Way You Are, how did you feel? Its almost half a million hits so far? I noticed you getting some love from ashton kutcher and a member of the marron 5?
I’m a huge fan of Bruno Mars. He’s a brilliant songwriter and singer. I was absolutely floored when he reached out to complement my cover of HIS song. It has well over a half-million views now. It was also incredible for me to find out that Maroon 5, who I’ve been a huge fan of since the beginning, was a fan of mine.
Then, when I heard that Ashton Tweeted my videos and it threw me over the top. To me, it’s like the ultimate validation that I’m doing what I should be, and it makes me that much more passionate about pushing further.
I found out recently that Christina Perri, who I covered on YouTube, also had my cover on her homepage. It’s unreal to me that these people who I read about, listen to, and see on TV are reaching out to me to let me know how they feel about my work.
How has the journey been so far, the support?
It’s been incredible so far. My fans are absolutely amazing and so supportive. I would NOT be where I am today without such passionate people behind me.
Where do you record all your videos on youtube? what location is that? what piano do you use?
I actually get this question from a lot of people. Well, I’ve never formally told anyone, but people are bound to find out sooner or later. It’s actually a piano showroom in midtown. The owners of that showroom are incredibly supportive of me and my music.
As it turns out, they have some of the best pianos in the world, so it’s really an amazing opportunity they’ve given me. I think my favorite piano to record on is a Mason & Hamlin piano. They have the biggest sound and complement my vocals.
You got that soothing voice of soul meeting hip-hop grooves with the soft rock twist to it? what do you think? did i get it right?
I’ll take it! My voice is kind of like Bruce Springsteen meets Gavin DeGraw.
What style of music would you say you produce?
My music is definitely pop rock but it does have some hints of R&B to it. I like the way that hip hop and R&B immediately make you move to the music, so I try to incorporate that feel into mine.
Anyways let talks about your new album CAN’T HELP BUT WONDER, what was the inspiration behind it? what has the feedback been like?
The title comes from the decision I made to take that leap of faith and make music my career. It is, by far, the hardest thing I’ve had to decide given the amount of work I put into my education and given the fact that I have bills to pay.
But to me, there’s no greater reward than seeing that leap pay off and I can’t help but wonder where I’d be if I hadn’t decided to take that chance. On the other hand, it also describes how I felt when I was working in a dead end financial job. I could not help but wonder what my life would be like if I were singing and performing in front of thousands of fans.
The feedback on the album has been great! It’s inspiring to me to hear that people listen to something I’ve put so much work into and tell me that one of the songs is exactly how they were feeling or that a track made them feel better about something. In general, it’s incredibly rewarding to make art for a living because it’s one thing that can immediately convey a specific emotion and have someone feel the same way you do.
What can those that havent gottent he album expect to get from it?
I think it’s easy for listeners to take away meaning from the songs, even if it’s not the original meaning behind the songs. A lot of my music is written about something other than love, but will come out as a song about a romantic relationship.
I find that the easiest way for someone to relate to an emotion I want to describe is to put it in a person-to-person relationship context. For instance, in the song “Been Way Too Long” on my album, the lyrics describe a relationship gone bad. It can be taken as a romantic relationship, but I actually wrote it about the job I was in when I decided I wanted to do music for a living. It kept me from my dream so I resented being in that relationship.
What should we be expecting from you in the future?
Well, you should definitely be on the lookout for my single on Ultra Records in early 2011 and also a ton of live performances around the country and hopefully soon the world. Keep checking out my YouTube channel, www.YouTube.com/MattBeilis for new videos and www.MattBeilis.com for new tour dates.
Do you have any tips for others looking to make it as an independent artist?
Never let someone else tell you when it’s time to look for a more reliable, more standard job. If you think you have what it takes to make it, you’re the only person who should make that decision.
Thanks for your time matt, wish you the best of luck.

Hi ladies, thanks for doing this interview, how are you both doing today?
Hello! First of all we want to say thank you for having this interview with us! We are both doing wonderfully today. The sun is shining and it’s December. We’re okay with that!
You’re so lucky, it’s snowing over here in london, Its freezing!
So tell us a bit about your background?
We are identical twin sisters, singers/songwriters/musicians. We were born and raised in New Jersey–Jersey girls woo hoo! We now just moved to LA. Music has always been a part of our lives. We decided we really wanted to pursue it after we graduated high school.
At what age did you both get into music?
Our parents started us with piano lessons when we were four years old. Luckily we stuck with it throughout our childhood. We started with guitar lessons in high school, and ironically enough, that was what inspired us to write songs.
Who inspires you both in music and personally?
We’ve had many different inspirations through different stages of our lives. Musically, Coldplay, Dave Matthews, and John Mayer inspired us to write.
Growing up, we listened to artists such as Madonna, Celine Dion, Janet Jackson, U2, George Michael, and so many more, and we really love Justin Timberlake. They really set the foundation for our love of music and influence of pop and rock.
Music was always blasting in the house! Personally, our parents inspire us for always being so supportive and hard-working.
Tell me something about your parents? Do they have favourites?
Our parents are wonderful! Of course they don’t have favorites! Our parents are our number one supporters, and we love them dearly.
You must have raised quite a havoc when you were growing up. It’s difficult enough to raise one child I can’t imagine having to raise the two of you?
Actually, we were told that we were really good kids, believe it or not! We always had each other to play with so I guess we made it easier on Mom.
Have you ever tried to switch identities?
We OF COURSE had to play a few twin pranks here and there. We switched classes a couple times in high school. Most times it worked, but one time it didn’t because the teacher noticed Maria writing with her left-hand. (The teacher already knew that was a difference between us). We even switched on a boyfriend for about five minutes. It worked!
What was it like growing up, always be around each other, especially learning musical instruments and singing at such a young age, who had the first initial interest in music?
Growing up and always being around each other made us very close. We naturally have the same interests, so we were both equally interested and excited about music. When we were really young, (Maria) wanted to play drums as our first instrument and (Helena) wanted to learn piano. I guess our parents thought (Helena) had a more sonically pleasing idea.
A lot of parents are choosing to home-school their children, how was it like for both of you, is it something you are both looking to adopt when you’re older?
Yes, we were home-schooled up until 7th grade, which is when we went to public school for the first time. Being home-schooled was great! We got to stay in our pajamas and take little play breaks whenever we wanted. What kid wouldn’t like that? The one-on-one attention and overall environment made learning fun.
What would you say were the advantages of being home-schooled?
We loved being home-schooled and are happy we went to public school at the age we did– 7th grade throughout high school. Coming into that new environment made us very eager to do well in school.
How did you start uploading covers/videos on YouTube? How is that being so far? What opportunities has it given you so far?
Well we were playing out live a lot after high school, so one day we thought we should start posting some of the songs that we perform live. We could essentially put on shows for people all over the world. It’s been really amazing knowing that our music reaches many different countries and gives us the opportunity to connect with people from all over.
What do you ladies enjoy doing outside of music?
We love spending time with family and close friends, watching movies, shopping, artistic activities, and hanging out in coffee shops! We are also huge animal lovers, so we love to help local rescue groups, and we spend a lot of time with cat rescue in particular.
What genre of music do you consider your work to be?
We would definitely consider our music to be pop. We like to call it “harmonic pop rock” because we love love love harmonies and incorporating them!
What is it like performing live? What has been your most performance to date?
It’s definitely a lot of fun to share the stage with each other and perform live. There’s a unique energy.
What kind of venues does you like performing at, a big venue or smaller venue?
We love them both!
So I’m a huge fan of gossip girl and i realised you both got to be in episode 4 of season 3, what was that like and most importantly how did you get on the show?
Aside from music, we love to act as well! It’s something we have also been doing since we were little. “Gossip Girl” was awesome! We absolutely loved seeing all of the clothes, and the crew and cast were great.
Cool, I’m going to watch that episode again and try to spot the both of you, did you get to speak to the main characters on the show?
Yeah we did. Everyone on the show who we’ve met were really nice!
What would you say has been your most memorable moment so far?
Our most memorable and EXCITING moment has been when we got to sing live “On-Air With Ryan Seacrest” on 102.7 KIIS FM! It was an amazing opportunity, and Ryan was so inspiring and wonderful in person– including the incredible, hard-working staff there.
What are you currently working on?
We are currently working on making as much music as we can! We love to stay productive. We have so much new material that we are getting out there! And of course, we are staying active with our YouTube page!
What about your future plans? Where do you see yourself five years down the line? More importantly, do you see yourself working together or separately?’
We hope to see ourselves way too busy in a good way– with a smile on our faces doing what we love. We will absolutely stay together! The good thing about our twin bond is that there is nothing that could really separate us. “Born together, friends forever.” Okay that was cheesy, and Maria is yelling at me.
What tips do you have for other artists out there, especially some of your supporters that are looking to start off their music career also?
Hmm our advice is to just try to get out there and be as pro-active as possible! Play out as often as you can and stay positive, confident, and dedicated. J We really believe that hard work pays off and talent will shine through.
Thanks for your time ladies and good luck!
Thank you so much for your time! It’s been a pleasure!
You certainly know you’re famous when you have a wikipedia page. Kata started her music journey at just age 2 after begging her father to enter her in a Beauty Pageant so she could sing in the talent category.
It all paid off for her at the end, not only winning the beauty pageant, she also won $50 off her dad after he said he’d pay her the amount to prove that she can’t sing. Everything after that, well..
Enjoy the interview.
Hi kata, Welcome to YHP, how are you doing?
I’m doing fabulous!!!
How did you get your start in music? what is your story?
When I was 2, I begged my father to enter me in a Beauty Pageant so I could sing in the talent category. He finally said he’d pay the $50 to prove to me I couldn’t sing. I ended up winning that beauty pageant, and going on and winning the finals. Then I started getting offers to sing everywhere, and so it began.
Do you have other family members who are/were interested in music?
None at all. I’m the black sheep. Or the red headed one?
What is your process like as a writer?
Well. I change. I get bored doing things the same way. So sometimes the melody comes first, sometimes the lyrics do. Sometimes it’s an idea. Sometimes it all comes rushing in at once. Just depends on the mood I’m in, and what I’m going through.
Do you think it’s easier working in a collaborative form or do you think it’s easier working individually?
It’s definitely “easier” working individually. BUT, I SO enjoy collaborating. You always come up with something you never would on your own, plus it’s fun to do what you love with people who enjoy the same thing.
What do you do in your time off?
I can’t say I ever really truly have any “time off”. Because when I have a day off from preforming, I am working on my Youtube video’s, etc. But I enjoy music so much, it’s all I really want to do. So it’s perfectly fine with me. I will say I enjoy snuggling with my puppies while writing back Youtube comments
When you first started, did you see this being your career?
Most definitely. I’ve never seen myself doing anything else. Even though occasionally I’ve had to “step out” in the real world, and wait tables, etc. But, never saw anything else as my career than music.
And what would you say is the most valuable lesson you learned from that time?
The most valuable lesson I’ve learned from ALL of my time in the music business is that you should ALWAYS be yourself. Never be afraid that someone won’t like you because of who you are. Cause people appreciate genuineness in this business, and it’s too hard keeping up a front.
So, do you write all the time? Are you writing songs for your next record right now?
I write something, in some form, every day. Whether it’s a part of a song, a poem, or some days I write 2 or 3 songs. I’m always writing. But definitely trying to narrow down some music for the new record.
What other artists are you a fan of? Mainstream and independent?
Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Lisa Lavie, Kina Grannis, Brandi Carlile, and many more. One of my favorite things is discovering new music, ESPECIALLY indies.
What, for you, makes a good show?
Feeling a true connection with the crowd.
What three character traits would your friends use to describe you?
Crazy, Silly, Fun.
What are some of the perks of being a country artist?
Well I wouldn’t call myself strictly a country artist, I’m kinda on the edge of the genre. But one of the best things is you are truly open to write about anything. It’s music that really connects with people, and their stories.
What are some of your inspirations?
Life, happiness, sadness, family and friends.
Is there a musical instrument that you wish you could play?
I play a little fiddle, but I wish I was a LOT better at it. That’s for sure.
Was there ever someone you’ve met that really made a difference in your life, be they personal or professional?
It always inspires me when I meet people that I am into their music, or art and they are down to earth, and truly thankful for my “love” of their craft. Some of those people are Merle Haggard, LeAnn Rimes, Lacey Schwimmer, Jim Ed Brown, and Taylor Swift.
Professionally, what goals have you set for youself this year?
To make people smile, and go where God leads me.
Looking back, what would you say to someone who was just starting this path?
Be yourself, don’t let the haters get you down, and always strive to me better. Practice.
What is your favorite childhood memory?
I have SO many. But some of my favorites are laying in the middle of the living room floor with my dad when I was a toddler pretending we were in the “Little Mermaid:. Dad was always SO amazing at pretending.
Words to your supporters?
Thank you for EVERYTHING you do. Your comments, your messages, the countless emails and letters. I am my music, and my music is NOTHING without you. I love you all! More than you could ever imagine.
Make sure you support her new song on itunes “Hey John”
Alyssa is a 15 years old singer/songwriter based in Ellicott City, Maryland in the US. A lot her happened since she started her youtube under the name “alyssashouse524” on December 30, 2008.
The most notable being getting discovered and signed by Jason Derulo on youtube and getting signed to his new label – Future history.
Check out what we talked about, hope you liked it.
Hi Alyssa, Welcome to YHP, How are you doing today?
Great, thank you.
We have a lot to talk about today but before we move on, quickly give me some background information about yourself?
I’m 15 years old and come from a large family. I’ve always enjoyed singing and was also sporty as a kid. I’m rather outgoing and always like to have fun.
Nice, so lets go back a bit and start from where it all began, when and how did you get involved in music?
When I was 8 years old, in 3rd grade, they started school talent shows. I decided to sing and after that I became known as the singer in my school and town. I did a few competitions but when I heard about Youtube thats where it really all began.
Why did you decide to start uploading videos and doing covers on youtube?
I use to go on youtube and look up singers. I had a lot of favorite singers on youtube and it really made me want to do it to. I wanted to do it because I loved singing for people, so on youtube I could sing for as many people I could get. It wasn’t really a way to get found, it was just a way to showcase what I love doing.
Social media has made promoting and engaging with supporters/fans so easy, how influential would you say tools such as facebook, twitter and youtube have been on your musical career?
Social media has been amazing. I can say that without, I wouldn’t be signed with Jason, I would have zero fans, and I wouldn’t be doing this interview. Being able to update people with the click of a button is amazing. Posting videos is what draws people and I can’t deny it, us teens love the computer.
What inspires you to write new music?
Real life situations inspire me to write music, but a lot of times that isn’t enough. I have certain songs I listen to that really inspire me. These songs have this certain vibe that just makes you want to write, it makes me want to make a song like it.
What was the feeling making a guest appearance with Jason at his show in your home town?
That was incredible. I’ve always loved Jason Derulo and was a really big fan of his before I even got in contact with him. Being on stage with him was an honor because he’s amazing. I had a lot of family come down too because it was where I live, so they could see what I’ve been doing and see that it really is all real.
Who are your major influences in the music industry?
Michael Jackson is a really big influence. I want to be able to have a song about helping the world or children because his message is really important to carry on. But, I also love the stories of Taylor swift and Beyonce. When I watched how they did it, it really got me inspired.
What was it like doing the video of your debut single ‘Overnight Celebrity with jason derulo?
That was such a great experience. I really didn’t know what to expect, but all the people that worked on it were amazing people.
How has the responses been so far?
They’ve been great. I’ve had good feedback, and nothing too negative.
Getting to it, you recently signed to DeRulo’s new label “Future History”, how did this happen, what is the full scope on that?
Yes, I signed with him towards the end of the summer. I’m really excited about it and great things are to come with this.
What convinced you to sign to his label?
Jason Derulo is an amazing person and everyone with him makes you feel right at home and in place.
What did your parents say about it? what was their response?
They were really excited and proud.
Living in the spotlight can be difficult especially at a young age. Do you find if challenging to let loose and enjoy your childhood?
Well, I feel like I’ve been waiting and ready for this. I had good middle school years with friends and my first highschool year but I started getting so into my music that this is what I needed.
Theret’s quite a juggling act, being in school and also focusing on your music, what do your friends say at school, i bet you’ve made more friends now at school, any awarkedness because now everyone is seeing as you as a celebrity.
I’m doing homesschool now and it’s still difficult to focus on.
What’s the hardest part of being a musician these days?
For me, I want to make sure to make my supporters happy. I want to keep it going and keep giving them more.
What type of music do you mostly listen to, and if you opened your iPod right now — what are the last 10 songs played?
I listen to a lot of different music. When I put my ipod on its speakers, I’d put on NeYo, Beyonce, and Trey Songz. Then, I play Taylor Swift, Daughtry, and Lady Antebellum. I always listen to Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, and The Jackson 5 too. I have a wide variety.
Explain your life and yourself in three words?
Music, patience, Ready.
What tips can you give to teenagers your age looking to get signed or get noticed by independent/major labels?
Keep putting yourself out there as much as you can. People are always looking so getting yourself out there on youtube is always helpful.
Why should we be expecting from you next?
I’m working on some new songs soon and hopefully an album next year.
Thanks for your time, words to your supporters/fans?
Thank you. I just want to say thank you so much to everyone that is supporting me. It means the world and is really incredible that people stick by me and continue to be apart of this journey.
I got the opportunity of interviewing Shan malaika over the week, An amazing singer! Check out what we talked about!
Shan Malaika is also swiss based student.
Hi shan, how are you doing? thanks for doing this, Welcome to YHP
Hello! I’m great thanks. Thanks for having me, I’m honoured!
Can you quickly give me some background information about yourself?
I’m a Tanzanian girl who grew up in Switzerland. I’m studying there at the moment. English is my mother tongue and I mysteriously have a fairly strong American accent
So how did you get involved in music?
Music was always an inherent part of me as long as I can remember. I sang my first solo to Michael Jackson’s “Heal the World” at 5 years old, was always in the school choir and I learned to play the piano by ear at a young age. It was something that came very naturally to me and I’m really grateful to God for that.
When it comes to the actual songwriting process, has it been harder to write songs based around certain subjects than to write songs that would be on more personal subjects for you?
Songwriting can be very cathartic and I think that’s why a lot of people find it easier to write about personal experiences or feelings. Since the age of 10 it’s been a form of therapy to create songs out of all my personal experiences throughout my adolescence. But I’ve also been put in the situation whereby I’ve been given a certain subject to write about and have done it.
It hasn’t been any harder; I think once you get into the swing of songwriting you can write about anything. But I am less attached to the songs I have written that didn’t come from personal experiences and I think the personal songs will come off as more real, heartfelt and sincere.
Why and when did you start uploading videos on youtube?
My first upload, a cover of “Someone Like Me” by Atomic Kitten, was on the 6th of July 2009. I actually created a youtube account in November 2007 as some friends had pitched the idea to me that I post videos, but I was always too afraid and could never do it. A particular friend of mine was very persistent on the matter and gave me a deadline, and I finally found the guts somewhere to upload something.
What are some of the opportunities using social media to promote your music has brought you?
I’ve worked with some popular Youtube artists such as Nick Pitera and Lisa Lavie, was a part of the We Are The World 2010 remake, which gained news coverage in the USA, featured on Perez Hilton’s blog and have received positive feedback from celebrities like Taio Cruz and Shontelle. All of this from singing in my bedroom! The internet truly is powerful!
If you could open for anyone who would it be and why?
One of the people I’d love to open for Rihanna, because she’s a world renowned recording artist with a fanbase that ranges in age groups, and her music is predominantly pop but with a lot of other influences. I think my music is aimed at a wide audience and I love dabbling in all sorts of genres of music from acoustic folk to rock and motown, so I feel like there’d be a little something for everyone to enjoy at her show.
What is the best advice that you have ever been given?
Value yourself. Fear God. Never compromise your values. Work hard.
Who were your major influences, internationally and locally?
Justin Nozuka, Leona Lewis, John Mayer, Lauryn Hill, Michael Jackson…
What has been the best moment of your music career so far?
I think being on Youtube in general has been a huge highlight of my music career- posting videos online definitely took my music career to new heights – I might even go as far to say it’s what really started my music career to begin with! It’s enabled me to generate a worldwide fanbase and get in contact with some other great artists. Ever since I started posting videos, I’ve taken my music a lot more seriously in general.
How would you best describe your vocal style?
Hmm… I’d say soulful…but adaptable to many styles.
What is, or has been the biggest obstacle you have faced as female artist?
Honestly speaking, a female artist is appreciated for her vocal ability but sometimes even more importantly her image and beauty. Some female artists have gained success due to their looks, image & sexuality rather than their actual talent and the harsh truth is that sometimes people won’t give your music a chance because they don’t like the way you look. I’ve personally faced a lot of criticism regarding my appearance on the internet and I think it’s challenging to get people to focus on the voice and message rather than appearance.
What do you do when you have free time?
Study. I’m a massive nerd. And spending time with friends and family. My life is actually constantly a little hectic but I like it that way
What tips do you have for aspiring musicians, especially those that are too shy to put videos on youtube?
Any aspiring musician should be strong to handle inevitable criticism and discouragement, stay focused, passionate and most importantly, stay true to themselves. As for people who want to post youtube videos: go for it! I don’t think people have anything to lose by posting videos online.
I’ve learned a lot about myself, singing technique and just society in general – it’s been a very eye opening experience. I feel like I’ve become a lot more thick skinned and driven, and it’s awesome having a creative outlet. I’ve also made a lot of friends from all over the globe. I’m so grateful for all of it. It’s definitely worth it!
What’s next for shan, what should we be expecting from you next?
Lots…and I mean LOTS of original material. I have over ten years worth of songs that have gathered dust on the shelf and I finally have the resources to bring them to life for people around the world. I hope people are excited to hear what I have to say
So I recently had an interview with Jake coco, a singer/songwriter/producer from Los Angeles California who also runs an independent record company called “Keep Your Soul Records, we spoke about what he is getting up to at the moment and his journey so far.
Hope you enjoy the interview.
Hi Jake, Thanks for doing this man.
Before we jump straight into the questions, can you give the YHP Readers some background information about yourself?
Certainly! My name is Jake Coco, I am a singer/songwriter/producer from Los Angeles California. I run an independent record company called “Keep Your Soul Records”. I have 5 albums out on iTunes and I am looking forward to making many more
So how did you get into music?
My mom got me started with the violin when I was about 2 and a half. I was creating music before I was really talking. I have always felt that I am able to communicate better through music than I am through words, I definitely consider it my first language. I used to fiddle around with anything musical that I could get my hands on. I eventually focused on the drums for a while, followed by guitar and piano when I was around 14.
What sort of music do you enjoy listening to?
Anything and everything. I spend most of my free time trying to find cool new artists and bands to check out. I love Jeff Buckley, The Beatles, Queen, Elton John, Elvis Costello
How do you describe your music to people?
Indie/Acoustic….I usually just throw a cd or mp3 on and let them describe it themselves, its much easier that way I really wish that I could use the word “Core” when describing it though….like “Grind-Core”….maybe I will be “Acoustic-Core”….
Do you have any favourite song at the moment?
Random, but its this song called “Dont Unplug Me” by a band called ALL CAPS that I found on Youtube. They are awesome.
Who is your favourite upcoming artist?
I have quite a few. Two new Keep Your Soul Records artists to watch out for are Caitlin Hart and Ari Stidham. I am excited about both of their records. I also thoroughly enjoy the group Carney, and Jason Reeves.
Who are your musical influences?
I try to draw influence from everyone that I hear. Even if something isn’t my particular cup of tea, I feel like there is always something to be learned from any musician/artist that you come upon. As a more specific answer, I would have to say Butch Walker and John Lennon are probably my two biggest songwriting influences.
What are you currently working upon?
I just finished a new album which I am looking to release in february of next year. I am also working on scouting artists for Keep Your Soul, as well as working with the talented artists that we have already found. I am also doing my best to teach my cats how to speak english….its not working so well though
How did you start uploading covers/videos on YouTube? How is that being so far? What opportunities has it given so far?
My business partner Julien contacted me when youtube first started and told me to video tape myself sitting around singing my songs. I didnt understand why, but I did it, and then all of a sudden we were featured on the front page of the website. We started getting a ton of views and it was a huge blessing in pushing album sales.
I took a break for a while to re-group and just started releasing covers again about 2 months ago. I am really enjoying getting back into it. A lot of artists seem to take themselves too “seriously” to do covers of pop songs, but I really enjoy taking the songs and kind of creating my own spin on them.
What would you say has been your most memorable moment so far?
Just this past year I have had the chance to work alongside the amazing Film/TV Composer Snuffy Walden (The Wonder Years, Roseanne, West Wing). I feel like all of the moments I spend working with him are amazing. He is an amazing mentor, and I feel so grateful to working with him.
What would you say has been your biggest challenge as an unsigned artist?
The main challenge as an independent artist/label is financially competing with the bigger labels and artists. We keep our promotional budgets minimal while they are out spending millions of dollars on advertising and radio play. I don’t really mind this though, Julien and I really enjoy finding new and creative outlets for me and the other artists to get their music heard
What do enjoy doing outside of music?
I love to hike, watch movies, eat sushi, travel and play poker
If you could share the stage with any 3 artists or bands who are still around and touring, who would they be?
Butch Walker, John Mayer, Elton John
So what should we be expecting from you in future?
I am hoping to have my newest record as well as the Caitlin Hart released in the next 4-6 months, and I will keep putting up as many videos as possible on my youtube.com/jakecoco channel.
Thanks!
Good luck jake and thanks for your time, hope to catch up with you soon.
During the week, I caught with an acoustic-pop duo called “Karmin”. The group comprises of Amy Heidemann who plays the guitar and sing lead vocals while nick slaps a wooden box, called a ‘cajon’ while singing harmonies.
The couple who met at Berklee College of Music in Boston and have been dating for 5 years after writing couple songs together decided to start their own group.
Now the full interview, hope you enjoy it.
Hi Guys, Thanks for doing this, how are you both doing?
Amy: I’m feeling quite nice today, thank you! Nick: A bit bloated…but besides that, fantastic. Haha.
Can you give us some background information about yourselves so the YHP audience can get to know you better?
Amy: We are an acoustic-pop duo called “Karmin.” I play guitar and sing lead vocals and Nick slaps a wooden box, called a ‘cajon’ while singing harmonies. We make YouTube videos of our original songs and also cover popular songs. There are some that call us, “The Little Band with a Big Sound.”
Why the name Karmin? Who decided on the name?
Nick: After we decided to form the band, we spent 2 months trying to decide on a name. We wanted something simple, but the “Beatles” was already taken. Karmin is actually a combination of the word ‘karma’ and the Latin word ‘carmen’ which means song.
How long have you all known each other? How did you meet? What genre of music do you consider your work to be? Who are your major influences?
Amy: We met at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Nick was studying jazz trombone and I was a voice major. We actually started dating first, but after writing a few songs together, decided to start our own group. We’ve been dating for what, 5 years now?
Nick: Yes, but it feels like 38. Just kidding. No really though, the genre is acoustic-pop but we draw influence from hip-hop, rock, and R&B. For artists, I gotta say John Mayer, Coldplay, Beatles, and all 90’s pop rock.
Amy: Artists for me are KT Tunstall, Gwen Stefani, and VV Brown.
When did you form your band? What inspired you to make music together? What are you currently working upon?
Nick: I remember it like it was yesterday. We were sitting in a train station two years ago, when Amy turned to me and said “Why don’t I learn guitar, you get a cajon, and we’ll be the modern day Simon and Garfunkel.” At the time, neither of us played those instruments, so I naturally said, “Let’s do this.”
Amy: There is this special thing that happens when we write or play music together, so we were curious to see what it could become or if other people would like it. Now, we are working on building a global fan base through the internet while developing a killer live show.
Do you have any upcoming shows we should know about?
Nick: We do a lot of street performances, but it’s getting really cold outside. We are planning to stream our next live show, so watch out for that!
What made you guys start uploading covers on YouTube? How has that been so far?
Amy: The YouTube covers give us the chance to play really awesome hit songs the way that we hear them! It also puts us in front of new eyes and ears on a regular basis, building our audience.
Nick: It’s totally different from writing original music because you don’t have to think about composing, just interpreting. We also throw lots of humor and dramatics into the videos, so they’re fun to make and hopefully fun to watch, too.
What are your rehearsals generally like? Do you have a set time each week in which you practice or are rehearsals more spontaneous?
Amy: Rehearsals happen when we’re both free! Usually, I run the rehearsals.
Nick: I usually run rehearsals, no matter what Amy says. The best ones are spontaneous.
What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?
Nick: Our biggest challenge has been the D.I.Y. thing. We literally do everything ourselves. Every time there’s an obstacle we say, why can’t we learn how to do that too?
Amy: That’s true! We’re like, recording studios are expensive, so we learned how to record ourselves and the same goes for video editing and graphic design. Yesterday we designed a Karmin t-shirt that will be available shortly!
What do you guys enjoy doing outside of music?
Amy: I can’t wait to see the new Harry Potter movie.
Nick: I can’t wait to pay for Amy’s ticket to the new Harry Potter movie.
What advice do you have for people who want to form their own band?
Nick: Only do it with people you musically trust and see eye to eye with.
Amy: Get ready for lots of hard work!
What has been your most memorable moment so far as a band?
Amy: Opening our CD for the first time was pretty amazing. We made friends with Janelle Monae and her band, too! They saw our cover of her song “Tightrope” and invited us to a show in Boston.
What are your ambitions for the future?
Nick: We want to spread only a positive message and give people something to smile about. We want every person in the world to get to hear our music.
Thanks guys.
Thank you!

I Finally got to do the interview with the wonderful Savannah outen, its so hard to believe what posting a cover of a song or posting a video to youtube can do for you or for your career if you were thinking about a career as a music artist.
Lets not even get into the countless numbers of artist that have either got signed or found management deals through youtube.
Savannah is also someone that has fully leveraged the power of youtube, or you could say social media in general with over 60,00 followers on twitter, 10,000 people on her facebook fanpage and now the youtube channel which she has over 60 million youtube video views, yes 60 millions and over 200,000 subscribers.
Check out what we talked about, hope you like it.
Hi Savannah, Its great to have you here, how are you doing today?
Hi, I’m great how are you?
Just a bit chilly, but im great you know thanks.
So Can you quickly give me some background information about yourself?
Yea, I just turned 18 a couple weeks ago, I’ve been singing since I was a little girl, and I love performing
When and how did you get involved in music?
I’ve been surrounded by music ever since I was young. I grew up listening to Hanson, Britney Spears, Celine Dion, Aretha Franklin.. tons of different artists. I always wanted to be a performer and sing on stage so I told my parents when I was about 10 that I wanted to start making it happen. And they have been my biggest supporters ever since.
Did you have members of your family that were actively involved in music whilst growing up?
I don’t come from a musical family. My mom does play violin but other than that, my family is not musical. My Dad and I always joke that I got my voice from him haha.
You are your musical and personal inspiration?
I love Celine Dion. Not only is she an amazing singer and performer, but she seems like such a sweet lady. The Beatles are another big inspiration. It’s so inspiring to listen to their music. It has such an impact on peoples lives.
Why did you decide to start uploading videos on youtube? werent you shy or scared of negative comments towards your music?
It was actually my parents idea. Nothing was happening at the time, so my parents discovered youtube and wanted me to post a video of me singing “Listen” by Beyonce. At first, I didn’t want to do it. I was nervous to see what people would think. I remember the next day, I looked at the video and it had tons of views and I was just so happy.
How do you deal with negative comments as we know that youtube or the internet really give anyone the ability to state their opinion publicly on one’s work?
I honestly try not to let those comments get to me. Once in a while, I will get upset from a rude comment, but you just have to brush it off. You can’t let them effect you.
How difficult was it for your to transfer your career, as an amateur singer on YouTube, into a professional singer, you know its very easy to be coined as a “YouTube artist.”
It hasn’t been too difficult. I don’t mind being known as the “Youtube Artist” just because that’s where I started and that’s where most everyone knows me from. It’s funny because when people recognize me they come up to me and call me Savannah7448.
Do you feel that getting signed to a major label helps with the transition, like the justin bieber transition?
I think that now a days you don’t need to be signed to be successful. Although, having a major label behind you is always a good thing because they can get you major radio airplay, access to big tours, etc. Being an unsigned artist, Youtube has been an awesome way for kids to hear my music. I think it would be awesome to be signed to a major label, though.
Are they any deals or interest from major labels to sign you, i know you worked with Esmee Denters a while before she got signed, do you still keep up to date with her, any chance you guys will be working together in the future?
I’ve met with a few labels. I’m crossing my fingers something works out. I’ve actually never worked with Esmee. I have talked to her a few times on Youtube though and she’s a very sweet girl. I’d love to work with her in the future.
You also design your own clothes, is this something you are looking to branch in and focus on in the future?
I wish I designed my own clothes! hahaha. I’ve always loved drawing designs. When I was in school, I’d always draw random outfits because I was bored. I still have those saved so it would be a dream for those to come to life someday.
What has the most memorable moment so far for you as an artist?
I’ve had so many memorable moments so far. I think the number one moment for me was reaching 50 million views on Youtube. That was such an amazing moment. I had worked so hard to get to that point and it was really cool to know that 50 million people have watched my videos. Also going on tour with Nat & Alex was an amazing time. It was my first tour, and it really gave me the chance to connect with my fans.
What do you do to unwind?
I’m very boring so I love to just sit at home and watch movies with friends. I’m always writing songs in my room, too. But I don’t mind being busy all of the time. It’s a good feeling.
What other artist do you like to watch on youtube?
There are so many talented people on youtube! My good friends, Boyce Avenue are amazing. Such talented and sweet guys. But I love to laugh so “MirandaSings08″ is hilarious. My friends and I are obsessed with her. And recently I was introduced to “Jake And Amir”. I can’t start my day without watching one of their videos. And my friend, Lucas makes those “Fred” videos that are just too funny
What advice would you give to young girls about following in your footsteps?
It’s a really tough business. When I first started out, I thought it was going to be easy. But I’ve learned A LOT about this crazy industry. My advice to young girls who want to be in the business is to Never Give Up.
Make sure it is something you are VERY passionate about. There are going to be so many people telling you that you won’t make it, or that you aren’t good enough. But you have to believe in yourself and know what your capable of doing.
What Are Your Future Plans?
My future plans…. I really want to release an acoustic EP soon. Just something to give to the fans. I really want to share some new songs I’ve been working on.
I’m also going to be releasing two new Christmas songs soon which I’m stoked about! I LOVE the holidays
I am going to be a correspondent for the American Music Awards Coca-Cola Pre Show LIVE on November 21st. That will be so much fun. I’ve always wanted to attend an award show.
Most of all, just keep working hard and try to make stuff happen
I recently got the opportunity to interview a very talented canadian singer/songwriter. Julie has over 6,000 subscribers, over a million views and has done over 50 videos on youtube.
Check out the interview, hope you enjoy it.
Hey Julie, Thanks for taking your time to do this interview with me on YHP, how you doing?
Hello Joseph! Thanks for having me! I am doing wonderful!
How did this whole singing career get started for you?
I have been singing in my bedroom since I was a kid, once I got over my shyness to sing in public thats when it became something real. Started recording my original songs and getting my music out there for the world to hear!
If you weren’t a singer, what would you be doing?
I am not sure. Can’t imagine doing anything else. Maybe open a restaurant
Where do you find inspiration for new songs?
If something is bothering me the only thing that helps is writing about it and singing about it. The majority of my songs are out of heart break. My favourite songs have come out of the deepest pain I have ever felt. I am so thankful for all of my heartache.
How did you get involved in posting covers on youtube and how do you pick your covers?
I got involved with youtube after seeing some amazing artists on there. I thought it was a great opportunity for Artists to put themselves out there for the whole world to see.
Covers that I sing at the moment usually the ones that are most requested or ones that really grab me. Like Bruno Mars Im thinking of covering his whole album haha
Are there any artists/musicians whom you want to work with in the future?
I would love to work with Gwen Stefani, Bruno Mars, Nelly Furtado, or Alicia Keys
Who are your greatest influences, musically and personally?
I am influenced by amazing singers and songwriters who make me fall in love with music over and over again. Personally I am influenced by my Mom and Dad. They are both amazing strong and kind.
What do you think sets you apart from other artists in your genre?
I’ve never really thought of setting myself apart from other artists. I love to sing and write love songs, and am thrilled when people like it
What are your musical plans for the year ahead?
The year ahead in 2011 I will be releasing a new EP on iTunes of my new music I have been recording. Plans for a Canadian tour as well, can’t wait to do more live shows!
What is the best and worst part about being a musician?
Best part of being a musician is being able to do what I love & sing all the time. Meeting new people at shows is amazing as well. I have yet to find a negative thing about it yet, when I do I’ll let you know
What has been the highest point of your career so far?
Having my song “Been through the fall” added to rotation on Ottawa’s Hot 89.9 & other radio stations across Canada was the highest point of my career so far. It was a dream for it to play once but when I heard it 7 times a day for months on the radio- that was just unreal. It was a huge boost of confidence for me to try even harder to get further in this music life
How do you enjoy passing the time?
Hanging out with my loved ones, singing, play guitar, watch movies, and check out new singers on youtube
You’re currently working on your new album, how is that going so far and what is the inspiration behind it?
It is going well, it’s an amazing process to write a song on the piano or guitar and then go into the studio work with a producer and something more amazing comes out. It’s one of the best feelings in the world! Inspiration behind the album is all about love and heartbreak
Do you write all your songs?
Yes! I am doing some co-writing as well, and hope to have those on my album too
How do you want people to describe you ten years from now?
I want to be remembered as a good person.
Is there anything else you would like to share with your fans, and are there any new songs that they should keep an eye out for?
Thank you to every one who supports my music, if you’ve ever voted for my song on the radio, requested it, watched my videos anything! Thank you so much! I love you guys!!! Lotsa new songs will be posting them on youtube very soon
What tips do you have for artists out there still trying to build and develop their craft as an artist?
With the internet these days the opportunities are amazing, but you have to work hard at it and put effort and dedication into it like everything you do. Don’t say no! Say Yes! Face the fear and go for it!
Thanks for your time Julie.
Thank you so much for asking me I enjoyed it!! Take Care!
