Talking music covers, opportunities, social media, setback and success – Interview with Nike Jemiyo

Sometimes I sit down and think about how terrifying it must be for people (Artists) who constantly put themselves out there for criticism, hoping to learn and grow from the exposure. We live in the world of Anonymous, where anything can be said from anyone online all in the light of opinions.

So for me, when someone decides to jump into the mouth of the shark, there are always something to learn from them.

I decided to sit down with one of YouTube’s very best, Nike Jemiyo as we spoke about her journey as an independent singer/songwriter, the opportunities from posting covers on YouTube, Criticisms and handling them.

Nike Jemiyo

Hi Nike, Great to have you on YHP, How are you doing today?

I’m great thanks!!

Can you quickly give us some background information about yourself?

I’m a singer – songwriter and pianist born and raised in London who is absolutely in love with music! Who isn’t, lol?

So how did you get into the whole music thing?

Well I’ve always sung in choirs from a young age. I started going to a classical music school when I was 15 where I had piano lessons and first started songwriting and performing so music has always been a huge part of my life.

Why did you decide to start posting your videos especially covers on YouTube?

Because a friend held a gun to my head and made me do it! (Jokes) But it was a friend who convinced me to! It was quite an emotional moment when he sat me down and told me that he thought I was wasting my talent. (I had let music take a bit of a back set because I was scared of failing). He said that he wanted to help me get myself out there and suggested posting covers on youtube – so I did!

Talking about YouTube, they are so many artists that have been bombarded by abuse through comments, how do you handle that, I have seen a lot of people that have either closed their YouTube account or chosen not to post cover at all.

I’ve been very fortunate as I haven’t really had too many negative comments and I rarely get the chance to read them because my fans are amazing and bombard them with unlikes which make them disappear! I do welcome constructive criticism though and it only make you stronger.

I can see you have an ever-increasing number of supporters, how instrumental has social media been in helping you build a presence and showcase your musical talent, especially building a fan base online?

Hugely! Youtube is really where it all started for me in terms of getting exposure and building a fanbase which has now migrated to Facebook and Twitter. Using social media has really helped me build relationships with my fans, it’s so cool being able to chat to them on a regular basis and get their opinion of my music!

Can you remember how it felt posting your first cover on YouTube; you were practically opening yourself to the world?

I was soooo nervous. You can tell that just by watching the video!!! I remember being anxious about what people would say about my voice and what I looked like. I can’t explain my relief and shock when the comments were really encouraging!

How effective has YouTube and other tools been on your career, tell us some of the opportunities that’s it’s given you?

Other than building a fanbase, it has opened opportunities for interviews, live gigs and pulled in interest from songwriters, producers, management companies and record labels!

Who are your musical influences?

This question is so hard, because there are so many! Michael Jackson, Alicia Keys, Stevie Wonder, Mariah Carey, Whitney Housten, Kirk Franklin, Ryan Tedder, Beyonce to name a few…

What sets you apart from other artists in your genre?

What makes me different is my love for the piano and the feel it brings to my music. I feel at home when it’s me and keys.

Who do you get inspiration from or wish to emulate in music and life?

Stevie Wonder’s musicianship is incredible, Christina Aguilera’s vocal sensational, Beyonce’s stage presence captivating and Michael Jackson efforts to raise awareness is truly inspiration! But there are so many people who have inspired me along the way, family , friends, people that have truly shown love and a desire to see change.

Who were your favourite musicians as a child?

Michael Jackson was definitely my number one favourite! My mum always tells the story of the time when I would disappear from her side while we were shopping and finding me dancing in front of a TV that he has was on!

How often and for how long do you practice?

Hmm…I should practice a lot more than I do. I have weekly rehearsals with my band. I would ideally like to practice piano and my vocals for an hour each day. That doesn’t happen.. :(

Share some of your worst experiences, especially some failures you’ve had starting up and how you have managed to bounce back from it even stronger?

I remember one gig when I first started performing on the live scene I was really really really nervous. Apparently I looked petrified. Anyway I was the last act on the night (no pressure) and I was singing a pretty tough song by Christina Aguilera. I got the bridge and to my dismay my voice cracked. (NOT THE ONE) Anyway I wanted the ground to swallow me up and couldn’t get off the stage quick enough.

After that I started taking footage of myself performing and using it to work on my performance, I got a vocal coach to help and constantly asked for constructive feedback. Now – I can’t wait to get up on stage!

What has been your most memorable moment so far since starting on your journey?

It has to be the first gig that I put on for my fans last July. It was the first time that I performed in front of a crowd that already knew and loved what I’m about which is special place to be for an artist. It’s a night I’ll never forget.

What is the best and worst part about being a musician?

For me the best is being the position where you can inspire people with music. It is a privilege and hugely rewarding. Unfortunately it can often be a thickle industry where you’re loved one minute and not the next – you’re constantly trying to prove yourself as good enough.

Do you do music full-time?

Yes and it’s great! I finally have the time I need to develop myself as an artist to focus on writing music

How do you balance your music with other obligations –family, job?

I use google calender, it’s awesome, lol. More seriously, I guess I try and do a bit of everything each week. So I have family time, some evenings to catch up with my friends and scheduled in session work and well as songwriting each week – which seems to be working so far.

What advice would you give to beginners who are nervous, especially posting covers on YouTube?

Be aware that there are people out there who may give unconstructive comments but continue to be yourself because no-one can do you better than you.

What are your musical plans for the year ahead?

Well at the moment I am writing with some very talented songwriters and producers with the intention of getting a product together to take to major labels and get signed. Let’s hope that these plans become reality!

Thanks for your time Nike.

The ups and downs of a youtube star – Michelle Martinez

A while ago I had the opportunity of interviewing a very talented singer/songwriter, Michelle Martinez, who I discovered on Youtube whilst listening to my daily dose of covers.

This is what we talked about.

Michelle Martinez

Hi Michelle, How are you doing today? Can you give the readers some background information about yourself?

Hello to all! It’s a beautiful sunny day, so I definitely can’t complain! A little bit about me, I’m a singer/songwriter from California working the independent artist route while balancing college and growing my online fanbase. I’m basically a little girl with big dreams.

How did get into music?

I’ve been singing since I was a little. It’s all I’ve ever really been passionate about. I’m an only child, so music got me through a lot of lonely times. Once my parents saw my talent, they offered to give me voice lessons. From that I did showcases, joined competitions and lived for the feeling of an audience’s applause.
Then I began wanting to create my own music and here we are today!

Can you tell us how you’ve been able to balance school with music, most artists would probably leave school and focus on just the music, what keeps you motivated not to stop school?

It’s not easy, I’ll tell ya that! Haha. I had no idea what I wanted to do in life once I got to college. I knew I wanted to be an entertainer, but my parents weren’t too thrilled about that idea. Back then, there were no independent artists or online sensations. So I never really thought I’d be able to live my dreams and decided to just go through with college.

But soon after, a Japanese record label discovered me on Youtube. Long story short, I dropped out of school and moved my whole life to Tokyo thinking I had hit the musical jackpot. Little did I know I’d end up right back where I started. Things didn’t work out and I was back home and really disappointed at my choices. But I decided to chase my dreams harder than ever now that I had gotten a taste of what it was like to be an artist. I also learned that nothing is forever in this industry and knew I needed a back up plan.

So I decided to re-enroll into college because I just didn’t want to end up living at my parents’ house forever as I chase my dreams. Haha. And that’s what keeps me motivated to juggle the two today. Music is my life, but I’m smarter to know that having a degree can only help me in case I need a fallback plan.

How did you get into posting covers on youtube? Were you nervous?

I hated the idea at first. I’ve been doing musicals, castings, competitions and auditions since I was little. I lived for an audiences reaction to my performance. And here were people posting videos of themselves from their bedroom becoming more famous than me! I was outraged! Lol. But that was just me being too stubborn to accept that new technology was opening doors for people like myself who would normally never have the opportunity to get this far.

I had a Youtube account just to watch other peoples videos, but I never intended to make it a channel. But I posted one video dedicating a song to a friend for his birthday since he lived so far away. After I saw the flood of positive comments and requests to post more vids I warmed up to the idea and I guess the rest is history.

How many opportunities do you think social media has brought into your career as a music artist?

I can’t even count how many opportunities I’ve gained through social media. I’ve done more amazing things with my music in the last 2 years than I had done in the 14 years prior to that. It’s such a blessing to live in a new world of technology.

Would you advice any artist to look in these avenues?

Yes and no. If you’re the kind of person who takes everything to heart, don’t post your stuff on the internet. People can be very mean. If I had a dollar for every negative comment I’ve received on a video, I’d be a millionaire by now. Lol.

But you just have to ignore the people who are intentionally being hateful. Criticism is good to improve yourself, but know that not everyone is going to love what you do. Now if you have thick skin and don’t care what people say about you, the internet is your haven. Have at it. Try it out and enjoy the opportunity to reach millions with your talent.

Were there ever any moments that you just wanted to give up on your singing dream?

If so, why? So many times. I’ve experienced rejection, people screwing me over, deals falling through, people discouraging me, haters, just all sorts of negativity. And every time, there was a moment where I was ready to throw in the towel. It’s hard to love something and want something so bad when obstacle after obstacle prevents you from reaching your dreams.

This industry is hard. It’s not for the weak, because it’ll eat you up alive. But if I let those things stop me, I’d never be happy with myself. I know nothing worth it ever comes easy.

Who has been your biggest inspiration and why?

I think my biggest inspiration is the other artists that I’ve been on tour with and gotten to work with. I look at them and know they came from the same place I did. Just someone who had a dream who decided to make their dreams a reality. They know what I feel and we’ve all built a special bond because of it. They keep me on my toes and we push each other to keep bettering ourselves and constantly create more content.

Another inspiration are the fans. Hearing or seeing them enjoy my music and what I do is a huge push to keep going. If I put atleast one smile on your face during my video or live performance, I will have done my job.

What is the best advice that you have ever been given? The steepest part of a mountain is always the hardest to climb, but that’s when you know you’re close to the top.

If you could open for anyone who would it be and why? Beyonce. I love her! Her energy, her style, her performance skills and confidence are something I strive for. To be in the same show as her would be a dream come true.

What advice would you give to other female singers that are trying to make it in the world of music?

Be yourself. It’s hard, I know. Media demands you to be a certain way to gain success. But break those stereotypes of what is normally expected from a female and don’t be afraid to be comfortable in your own skin.

What has been the highest point of your career so far?

Today is the highest point. Everyday I gain another fan, create a new idea, explore another avenue. Every new day will be my highest point because it’s another day I chose not to give up on my dreams.

Is there anything else you would like to share with your fans, and are there any new songs that they should keep an eye out for?

Yes, look out for a few music videos from my album, some awesome collabs and a new single.

If you weren’t a musician what would you do with all of your creative energy?

Well I’m a Broadcasting Major at school, I’d definitely focus more on the behind scenes of Television and Radio. I’m used to being in front of the camera, but now I’m learning all the aspects of what goes on behind the camera. Maybe after my singing career takes off the way I’d like it to, I’ll look into Television production.

Any final words to your suppporters?

A big thank you to those who’ve been following my journey. There’s a lot to come from me and I appreciate your support. I would be no where without you guys! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE YOU!

How do you want people to describe you ten years from now?

A legend. :)

Interview with Alyssa Shouse: The 15 years old signed by jason derulo from youtube

Alyssa is a 15 years old singer/songwriter based in Ellicott City, Maryland in the US. A lot her happened since she started her youtube under the name “alyssashouse524” on December 30, 2008.

The most notable being getting discovered and signed by Jason Derulo on youtube and getting signed to his new label – Future history.

Check out what we talked about, hope you liked it.

Alyssa shouse

Hi Alyssa, Welcome to YHP, How are you doing today?

Great, thank you.

We have a lot to talk about today but before we move on, quickly give me some background information about yourself?

I’m 15 years old and come from a large family. I’ve always enjoyed singing and was also sporty as a kid. I’m rather outgoing and always like to have fun.

Nice, so lets go back a bit and start from where it all began, when and how did you get involved in music?

When I was 8 years old, in 3rd grade, they started school talent shows. I decided to sing and after that I became known as the singer in my school and town. I did a few competitions but when I heard about Youtube thats where it really all began.

Why did you decide to start uploading videos and doing covers on youtube?

I use to go on youtube and look up singers. I had a lot of favorite singers on youtube and it really made me want to do it to. I wanted to do it because I loved singing for people, so on youtube I could sing for as many people I could get. It wasn’t really a way to get found, it was just a way to showcase what I love doing.

Social media has made promoting and engaging with supporters/fans so easy, how influential would you say tools such as facebook, twitter and youtube have been on your musical career?

Social media has been amazing. I can say that without, I wouldn’t be signed with Jason, I would have zero fans, and I wouldn’t be doing this interview. Being able to update people with the click of a button is amazing. Posting videos is what draws people and I can’t deny it, us teens love the computer.

What inspires you to write new music?

Real life situations inspire me to write music, but a lot of times that isn’t enough. I have certain songs I listen to that really inspire me. These songs have this certain vibe that just makes you want to write, it makes me want to make a song like it.

What was the feeling making a guest appearance with Jason at his show in your home town?

That was incredible. I’ve always loved Jason Derulo and was a really big fan of his before I even got in contact with him. Being on stage with him was an honor because he’s amazing. I had a lot of family come down too because it was where I live, so they could see what I’ve been doing and see that it really is all real.

Who are your major influences in the music industry?

Michael Jackson is a really big influence. I want to be able to have a song about helping the world or children because his message is really important to carry on. But, I also love the stories of Taylor swift and Beyonce. When I watched how they did it, it really got me inspired.

What was it like doing the video of your debut single ‘Overnight Celebrity with jason derulo?

That was such a great experience. I really didn’t know what to expect, but all the people that worked on it were amazing people.

How has the responses been so far?

They’ve been great. I’ve had good feedback, and nothing too negative.

Getting to it, you recently signed to DeRulo’s new label “Future History”, how did this happen, what is the full scope on that?

Yes, I signed with him towards the end of the summer. I’m really excited about it and great things are to come with this.

What convinced you to sign to his label?

Jason Derulo is an amazing person and everyone with him makes you feel right at home and in place.

What did your parents say about it? what was their response?

They were really excited and proud.

Living in the spotlight can be difficult especially at a young age. Do you find if challenging to let loose and enjoy your childhood?

Well, I feel like I’ve been waiting and ready for this. I had good middle school years with friends and my first highschool year but I started getting so into my music that this is what I needed.

Theret’s quite a juggling act, being in school and also focusing on your music, what do your friends say at school, i bet you’ve made more friends now at school, any awarkedness because now everyone is seeing as you as a celebrity.

I’m doing homesschool now and it’s still difficult to focus on.

What’s the hardest part of being a musician these days?

For me, I want to make sure to make my supporters happy. I want to keep it going and keep giving them more.

What type of music do you mostly listen to, and if you opened your iPod right now — what are the last 10 songs played?

I listen to a lot of different music. When I put my ipod on its speakers, I’d put on NeYo, Beyonce, and Trey Songz. Then, I play Taylor Swift, Daughtry, and Lady Antebellum. I always listen to Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, and The Jackson 5 too. I have a wide variety.

Explain your life and yourself in three words?

Music, patience, Ready.

What tips can you give to teenagers your age looking to get signed or get noticed by independent/major labels?

Keep putting yourself out there as much as you can. People are always looking so getting yourself out there on youtube is always helpful.

Why should we be expecting from you next?

I’m working on some new songs soon and hopefully an album next year.

Thanks for your time, words to your supporters/fans?

Thank you. I just want to say thank you so much to everyone that is supporting me. It means the world and is really incredible that people stick by me and continue to be apart of this journey.

Don’t forget to follow Alyssa on twitter, Check her on facebook.
Keep up to date with her latest music videos and covers.

The Journey so far – Savannah Outen

I Finally got to do the interview with the wonderful Savannah outen, its so hard to believe what posting a cover of a song or posting a video to youtube can do for you or for your career if you were thinking about a career as a music artist.

Lets not even get into the countless numbers of artist that have either got signed or found management deals through youtube.

Savannah is also someone that has fully leveraged the power of youtube, or you could say social media in general with over 60,00 followers on twitter, 10,000 people on her facebook fanpage and now the youtube channel which she has over 60 million youtube video views, yes 60 millions and over 200,000 subscribers.

Check out what we talked about, hope you like it.

Savannah outen

Hi Savannah, Its great to have you here, how are you doing today?

Hi, I’m great how are you?

Just a bit chilly, but im great you know thanks.

So Can you quickly give me some background information about yourself?

Yea, I just turned 18 a couple weeks ago, I’ve been singing since I was a little girl, and I love performing :)

When and how did you get involved in music?

I’ve been surrounded by music ever since I was young. I grew up listening to Hanson, Britney Spears, Celine Dion, Aretha Franklin.. tons of different artists. I always wanted to be a performer and sing on stage so I told my parents when I was about 10 that I wanted to start making it happen. And they have been my biggest supporters ever since.

Did you have members of your family that were actively involved in music whilst growing up?

I don’t come from a musical family. My mom does play violin but other than that, my family is not musical. My Dad and I always joke that I got my voice from him haha.

You are your musical and personal inspiration?

I love Celine Dion. Not only is she an amazing singer and performer, but she seems like such a sweet lady. The Beatles are another big inspiration. It’s so inspiring to listen to their music. It has such an impact on peoples lives.

Why did you decide to start uploading videos on youtube? werent you shy or scared of negative comments towards your music?

It was actually my parents idea. Nothing was happening at the time, so my parents discovered youtube and wanted me to post a video of me singing “Listen” by Beyonce. At first, I didn’t want to do it. I was nervous to see what people would think. I remember the next day, I looked at the video and it had tons of views and I was just so happy.

How do you deal with negative comments as we know that youtube or the internet really give anyone the ability to state their opinion publicly on one’s work?

I honestly try not to let those comments get to me. Once in a while, I will get upset from a rude comment, but you just have to brush it off. You can’t let them effect you.

How difficult was it for your to transfer your career, as an amateur singer on YouTube, into a professional singer, you know its very easy to be coined as a “YouTube artist.”

It hasn’t been too difficult. I don’t mind being known as the “Youtube Artist” just because that’s where I started and that’s where most everyone knows me from. It’s funny because when people recognize me they come up to me and call me Savannah7448.

Do you feel that getting signed to a major label helps with the transition, like the justin bieber transition?

I think that now a days you don’t need to be signed to be successful. Although, having a major label behind you is always a good thing because they can get you major radio airplay, access to big tours, etc. Being an unsigned artist, Youtube has been an awesome way for kids to hear my music. I think it would be awesome to be signed to a major label, though.

Are they any deals or interest from major labels to sign you, i know you worked with Esmee Denters a while before she got signed, do you still keep up to date with her, any chance you guys will be working together in the future?

I’ve met with a few labels. I’m crossing my fingers something works out. I’ve actually never worked with Esmee. I have talked to her a few times on Youtube though and she’s a very sweet girl. I’d love to work with her in the future.

You also design your own clothes, is this something you are looking to branch in and focus on in the future?

I wish I designed my own clothes! ;) hahaha. I’ve always loved drawing designs. When I was in school, I’d always draw random outfits because I was bored. I still have those saved so it would be a dream for those to come to life someday.

What has the most memorable moment so far for you as an artist?

I’ve had so many memorable moments so far. I think the number one moment for me was reaching 50 million views on Youtube. That was such an amazing moment. I had worked so hard to get to that point and it was really cool to know that 50 million people have watched my videos. Also going on tour with Nat & Alex was an amazing time. It was my first tour, and it really gave me the chance to connect with my fans.

What do you do to unwind?

I’m very boring so I love to just sit at home and watch movies with friends. I’m always writing songs in my room, too. But I don’t mind being busy all of the time. It’s a good feeling.

What other artist do you like to watch on youtube?

There are so many talented people on youtube! My good friends, Boyce Avenue are amazing. Such talented and sweet guys. But I love to laugh so “MirandaSings08″ is hilarious. My friends and I are obsessed with her. And recently I was introduced to “Jake And Amir”. I can’t start my day without watching one of their videos. And my friend, Lucas makes those “Fred” videos that are just too funny :)

What advice would you give to young girls about following in your footsteps?

It’s a really tough business. When I first started out, I thought it was going to be easy. But I’ve learned A LOT about this crazy industry. My advice to young girls who want to be in the business is to Never Give Up.

Make sure it is something you are VERY passionate about. There are going to be so many people telling you that you won’t make it, or that you aren’t good enough. But you have to believe in yourself and know what your capable of doing.

What Are Your Future Plans?

My future plans…. I really want to release an acoustic EP soon. Just something to give to the fans. I really want to share some new songs I’ve been working on.

I’m also going to be releasing two new Christmas songs soon which I’m stoked about! I LOVE the holidays :)
I am going to be a correspondent for the American Music Awards Coca-Cola Pre Show LIVE on November 21st. That will be so much fun. I’ve always wanted to attend an award show.

Most of all, just keep working hard and try to make stuff happen ;)

Thanks for your time savannah.

Thank you so much!

The combination of Jazz and Philanthropy = 16 years old nikki yanofsky

Talk about starting early, Nikki is the 16 years Canadian jazz queen who started making waves as early as 13, with performances at the Montreal International Jazz Festival, Jazz Festival in Japan, Avery Fisher Hall she quickly began an instant hit, constantly being compared to Ella Fitzgerald because of her vocal ability.

She has also helped in raising over $10 Million for local, national and international charities.

She also became the youngest-ever jazz signing to a major record label after signing to decca records, A part of Universal Music Group

Not bad for someone that’s only 16 right?

nikki yanofsky

Hi Nikki, thanks for taking time to be on YHP today. How are you doing?

Doing great! Just got home from a 3 week US tour.

How did you get into music at such a young age?

I was always surrounded, I live with a bunch of music lovers and I guess I was always exposed to the good stuff.

Do you do all the writing on your songs?

No, I co-write the songs with various artists like Jesse Harris and Ron Sexsmith or even Randy Bachman

How would you describe your musical style?

Eclectic! I love all genres and try to bring that love to my music and reflect it.

You’ve also been involved in some philanthropy at a young age. What prompted that action?

I think it feels great to give back and help. I’m very aware how lucky I’ve been and I’m also very aware that not everyone is and although I get the chance to live out my dream everyday of my life, there are children out there who are stuck in the hospital [ambassador for the Montreal Childrens Hospital] or who aren’t granted the opportunity to have a musical education [Ambassador for MusiCounts], which is why I feel it necessary to lend them my voice!

How do you cope doing your school work with your music career? It must be exhausting.

Not at all! I go to a really supportive school so they give me my work before I go on the road and I just do it on planes and such.

You are always been compared to Ella Fitzgerald. What are your feelings towards that, does it add any extra pressure?

Nope! I love her and I guess you hear her influence on me when I sing but I’m still my own voice in the end.

You are constantly breaking musical records, the latest being the youngest ever jazz singer signed to a major label. How does it feel?

It feels great! It’s definitely a perk but I never decided to be a singer to break records, just for the love of the music!

You’ll soon be back in the UK promoting your new album. How has the experience been so far?

I LOVE the UK I can’t wait to go back and eat some more fish’n'chips!

I know your album comes out in January. What should fans be expecting from the album, what is the message behind the album?

It’s basically a vocal diary, you see who influenced me (through the covers) and how (through the originals).

You have also launched an initiative called jazz for kids. What’s the idea behind this?

Jazz is a great form of art and I think it’s important that it lives on, what better way that to ignite a love for it in a new generation! :)

Now that you’re on the record label as your friend Justin Bieber, should we be expecting any collaboration from the two of you soon?

Never say never… No pun intended haha

Do you have any other projects that you are currently working on?

Always writing and consuming and surrounding myself with opportunities to grow as an artist.

What would you say has been your most memorable moment so far?

All of it, I can’t pick one because each moment shapes the next. Every second of this is a learning experience.

What tips would you like to give to young musicians looking for a break-through in the industry?

One of my favourite quotes says it all: “It’s one thing to be on the right track, it’s another thing to just sit there” – Will Rogers. If you really love something and can’t see yourself doing anything else, this applies to everything, chase it.

Last words for your fans?

Thank you for your support and keep listening! Peace :)

Nikki Yanofsky performs at the London Jazz Festival on November 12th and 17th so make sure you pen those dates down.

Her album ‘Nikki’ is released on January 10th 2011 in the UK, make sure you support her on the new album and purchase a copy.

Dont forget to check out her website, connect with her of facebook and twitter

Can you kindly give us some background information about yourself?

I’m from Richmond, VA and I’m a senior accounting major at Virginia Commonwealth University. Music has been a part of me since I was born. I started singing in church when I was five and since then, it has been my dream to share my music with the world. Last year I picked up a guitar and taught myself how to play. By May of 2009 I started uploading acoustic covers to YouTube and the world just caught on.

Tell us about how you got into music? At what did you start experimenting with music?

I come from a musical family, My mom plays the piano, my dad plays the drums, my brothers play many instrument. I’ve been singing my whole life. I didn’t start experimenting with music until i was 10. I started writing my own songs and composing my own melodies.

How many instruments do you play?

I play the piano and guitar, but I want to learn how to play the banjo

Where does your inspiration come from especially when writing some of your songs?

I’m inspired by my life.
My music is my diary in a sense. I document what happens through music.

I mean you could have easily dropped out of school to focus on your music, what would you say has been the value in completing your education?

Being in college has taught me discipline and patience. I had to prioritize my goals and make decisions on what is important. It also helped me to be balanced and distribute my time effectively. Sometimes it’s about more than just getting an education, it’s about challenging yourself to finish something you started that’s is the reward.

What has been your most memorable experience so far?

So far, my most memorable experience is when I was walking in Times Square last year and one of my subscribers from YouTube recognized me. She was so excited and wanted to take pictures and everything. I’ll never forget that moment because it made my music real for me. Before that, I didn’t think people really cared.

What would you say has been some of the opportunities sharing your videos on sites like YouTube, Facebook and twitter given you especially your covers and original songs on YouTube?

Youtube opened a new chapter in my life. I’ve met so many people from youtube. Many of them are now working on my team. I’ve been contacted by many record labels, producers, and more. But most of all YouTube has given me the ability to spread music that changes people’s lives for the better. That is my goal. If I can’t make you feel good about yourself, then I’m not doing my job. 

Let’s talk about mainstream music, do you think it all comes down to selling records and opportunities that others can’t seem to turn down which usually comes in exchange for their creativity as an artist, as a lot of people decide against getting signed and staying truth to their style as musician?

Everything you said is true and happens so much in the industry. Many artist get so excited that they jump at the first opportunity before them and ignore the fine print in their contracts. The one thing I have learned is patience. It’s all about timing, the right opportunity will come in due time.

You know I am currently learning how to play the guitar as well, to be honest, its killing me! What tips can you give me or what have been some of the techniques you’ve learnt so far?

Practice until you get it right. When I bought my guitar last year, i had no clue what i was doing. So, I bought a theory book and learned the basic melody chords, moved to barre chords and now Im working on learning my scales. You just have to do what works best for you. The best technique is to have fun and simply enjoy learning a new instrument.

So you will be graduating very soon, it must be really exciting for you? Why not use your degree in accounting; I’m sure someone as committed and hard-working as yourself could still be successful as an accountant.

I will definitely be putting my accounting degree to good use. I decided to major in accounting so I could have an all around business sense. This has prepared me well for the industry. Not only can I play a guitar and sing, but I can do taxes, write contractual agreements, and create brands. In these days the industry requires the artist to be well rounded in all areas. lol

It is not very often you see as 12 years old practicising music and learning instruments, can you remember your motivation in learning those instruments, especially in those age when they are so much distractions out there?

In my house, music was apart of my family. My brother’s always played instruments growing up, but I didn’t. I felt left out. I just wanted to be able to play an instrument so that motivated me. I taught myself how to play the piano in the 6th grade and I didn’t pick up a guitar until I was a junior in college. This just shows you that its never too late to learn how to play an instrument. You just have to REALLY want it.

How do you balance your music and education? I mean it must be so difficult, projects, coursework, practising, and performances?

It gets hard sometimes trying to balance school and music. I “try” to be as organized as possible and write everything down I need to do. All of my teachers know I do music, so they work with me as much as they can. I just take it one day at a time. I’m doing what I need to do in order to graduate in the spring.

How many hours do you take out to practise your music and instrument or how do you plan your time for rehearsing?

I practice when I want to. Usually on and off through the day. It always seems to be at the most awkward times like when I should be studying or really late at night.

What would you describe your style as?

My sound can best be described as infused rhythm and blues / soul. I take a lot from every genre and make it my own. So sometimes you may hear a little country, a little jazz, and a little rock. Add a sprinkle of Anhayla, and there you have it. I like to let my fans define my style.

I know you have a manager, how did that happen? A lot of people have difficulties getting managers, especially those that are able to respect their decisions and help them grow as a musician and also look for opportunities for them to showcase their talent? What is your story?

I met my manager online. He saw one of my YouTube videos and decided to take a chance with me. He has managed many Billboard charting artists so the expertise was there. Our relationship did not start from management.

The basis of our relationship has been built on trust and a shared passion for my dream. I flew to Kansas City and met him and his wife. Since then, we all have been inseparable. My manager has my best interest at heart and shares the same morals I do.

As a new artist you should always first focusing on creating great music and an online following. Make as much noise as possible and stay true to yourself and the right people to help your career along will follow.

What would you say has been some of the most valuable lessons you’ve learnt so far being a music artist?

I’ve learned that it’s okay to be yourself. I’ve learned to accept criticism and not let the things people say affect me. People are either going to love you or hate you. However, at the end of the day it comes down to what I think of myself.

Give us some tips for young female artists looking to break into the music industry or looking to better themselves vocally?

Be original. Don’t conform or “sell out” to what you think will give you that break. Always look for ways you can perfect your talent. Most importantly, love yourself. If you don’t have confidence in who you are and a strong character this industry will tear you part. People will constantly be judging you and telling you what you should and should not do and you have to be strong enough not to lose yourself.

What are your next moves for your musical career?

I’m graduating in the spring of 2011, and I will pursue music full-time. I will finally be able to realize my dreams. I plan on releasing my debut EP first and also debuting with my single “UGLY” which you can see and hear a snippet of on YouTube. The video is also coming soon! If there are any creative and up and coming video producers reading this and want to discuss the video let me know. Lol. This is definitely just the beginning.

Thanks for your time Ahn

Interview with the multi-talented sheena melwani

Hey Guys, I had the opportunity to interview the beautiful and multi-talented media artist Sheena, Sheena has used social media to share her passion for music, TV and film.

She just finished her new video on youtube, check it out!

Hope you enjoy the interview.

Sheena Melwani

Hi Sheena, How are you doing?

I’m doing great thank you!

So can you quickly give us some background information about yourself?

That’s an easy question (laughing)! In a nutshell I would say I’m a Media Artist, with roots as a singer-songwriter. In today’s digital age, I find myself attracted to various areas along with music, like TV/Film, and of course the Internet has been good to me as well!

How would you describe your style of music?

My music is really an amalgamation of many different styles. I’ve been fortunate enough to have been influenced by different corners of the world. I grew up in Canada, studied jazz, and opera and always loved R&B/Pop music.

My grandfather, who was a composer in India taught me to appreciate Indian classical music from an early age. And, to add to the mix, I lived in Tokyo a few years ago and that really opened my ears and my heart to a whole new musical world.

What type of music do you listen to?

I love any kind of music that speaks to me. The message can be found in a catchy beat, a beautiful storyline, or even something weird and quirky that catches my attention. I love music that is moving.

Doesn’t matter what the style is, as long as I can feel the passion behind the beat or words, I’ll keep listening.

Who are your musical inspirations?

I cannot just name one or two people who have inspired me. I am really lucky that way because my inspiration stems from everything and everyone around me.

We all have music in us. Of course, my family and friends contribute the most to my songwriting, because I write from my experiences (or theirs!); and, in terms of inspirations to sing, the list starts with my first choir director and range to my favourite singers and songwriters today.

A person can be inspired just about anywhere and I think the trick is just to be receptive to it. I once heard that songs are already written, we just have to find and share them. I believe that 100%.

At what age did you realise that singing was a career path you wanted to pursue?

I’ve never really wanted to do anything else to be honest. Of course, I’ve had bad days, weeks or even months, but when music hits me hard I shift my focus to screen projects (nothing that I can reveal yet I’m afraid!) or to the SheenaMelwani.com world! How can you really complain when you do what you love every day?

What will you say has been some of the benefits of posting your videos online, especially on YouTube and the power the internet has given individuals and talents to be able to share their passion with the world?

I was in Japan when I posted my first video on YouTube, and thought it would be a good way to stay connected with my friends back home. It was my way to share my voice and music with my circle of friends and family (and I thought a few others might watch as well, and that was fine by me).

Now, two years and over 10 million hits later, people from all over the world are encouraging me every day to finish my album, to sing another song on SheenaTV, to help guide their own budding careers. I get messages in English, French, Spanish, Hindi, Japanese, German, Portuguese – the list goes on and on!

The internet has literally brought us all together and it’s thanks to YouTube, Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and such sites that independent artists now also have direct access to a worldwide fan base.

Why did you decide to start SheenaTV?

I first started SheenaTV because I was contacted by Yahoo! to be one of the very first broadcasters for a beta project called Yahoo! Live. I thought it would be a nice way for people to get to know the real me and agreed. Ironically, the Yahoo! program died but SheenaTV went from an average of 50 viewers an episode to close to a 1000 – thankfully not everyone chats at the same time!

People enjoy connecting in ‘real-time’ and SheenaTV allows me to do so directly with my fans. Apart from playing the part of the ‘Human Jukebox‘ (people don’t seem to care if I know all the words to their favourite songs), I also sample some original music, discuss issues the group wants to discuss and sometimes give everyone a ‘behind-the-scenes’ view of a video being filmed.

What do you outside music, what other projects are you involved in?

I’m into a lot of things other than music! Music may be my heart, but it is not the only thing in my life! I spend almost every morning at the gym, enjoy practicing yoga, love to cook, and most of all – love to eat!

What should we be expecting from you in the near future?

Many wonderful things I hope! I have an album in process, an iPhone app in the making, some screen ideas somewhere in the mix and I’m just going with the flow. Its not about the destination, but the journey, right?

What has been your greatest challenge?

When you handle everything independently, it really takes discipline and motivation to keep moving forward. I think this has been my biggest challenge thus far. Somedays, you can wake up and feel like you’ve moved backwards, and that’s not a nice feeling!

Lucky for me, that doesn’t happen too often, and when it does the people in my life are great at getting me back on my feet. And, when that doesn’t work I just get on SheenaMelwani.com or Facebook and seeing people commenting from around the world, at all times of the day and night reminds me immediately why I do what I do.

What advice do you have for those who want to pursue a career as a singer?

Don’t take no for answer. If you want to be a professional singer, then keep singing and don’t be afraid to put yourself and your music out there. Not everyone is going to like your voice, but you have to keep pushing. And in this day and age, with all these social media tools right at your fingertips, there really is no excuse anymore. Sing because you want to sing, not because you want people to listen!

Where do you see yourself five years from now?

A lot can happen in five years! I hope I’m doing more of what I’m doing now. Working on various media projects for a wider audience. I am a big believer in destiny, so I too am excited about what destiny may have in store for me!

Any last words for your fans and the readers of YHP?

Of course, I always have something else to say! Thank you for watching me, listening to my music, visiting my website, and simply for believing in me. It makes all the work much easier to do when you see people enjoying the final product, so a big “Thank You” – from the bottom of my heart for making my experience such a wonderful one.

Thanks for your time Sheena
