How to get your first customer: Always the hardest but ultimately the most satisfying

Getting your first customer

So you have set up your own business and you have a great product or service, now what?

Getting your first customer. Your first sale will always be the hardest but ultimately the most satisfying. The realization that someone is willing to spend money on your offering is  a great moment.

Unless you have an incredible, innovative new product that will go viral in hours you will have a lot of work to do in getting your first customer and start bringing in a steady stream of customers as you grow.

Whether you are opening a new restaurant, a consultancy, a software firm etc… it is always gets easier to gain new customers when you already have many customers, happy customers. Nobody wants to eat in an empty restaurant, clients want to know who you have worked with before and firms want to know who else is using your product. So how do you get your first customer, if you need customers to get your first customer?

A lot time will need to be spent on the computer spreading the word and on networking to get those first few customers to set you on your way. Remember word of mouth is one of the best marketing tools, so make sure you don’t forget to provide a quality customer service as the first few customers trickle in, they can help you grow your initial user base the quickest, especially with the advent of social networking and the role it plays in influencing large numbers of friends, which can help spread the word like wildfire. That leads me nicely on to my first point:

Social Networking – Set your self up on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and any others you can manage. These tools have given startups a great way of  marketing their business for free. Take time to interact with others and offer value. It may be advisable to offer special introductory offers to entice your first few customers. Make them feel special and they might sure the experience with their friends, followers, network whatever you want to call them.

Give it away – That’s right offer your product or service for free! Now this might not always be possible but if you can it’s a good way to build up users. You can integrate this with your social networking strategy and offer your first 20 followers or fans your product/service free. This also builds up your social network.

Now I know giving your product away for free doesn’t make you money but you can offer your product free to gain users. I personally count a customer as someone who has paid for the product or service. giving your product away for free will increase its users and help you gain your first proper customer.

If you are an online software company for instance you might even offer a basic free version or free trial  in the hope of upgrading them to a paid package at some point, therefore creating a profitable ROI over the lifetime of that customer.

Think a little closer to home - Friends, family, ex colleagues may all be potential customers. They would also be more inclined to buying your product as they may feel obliged to help you out. They can also be perfect in helping you see potential problems, where you might be going wrong. Spotting these and fixing it before you get too many customers from further a field who find problems, which may harm your brands reputation, is a benefit of selling to those closer to you.

Network – This is an important step in making your business known. It also gives you the chance to learn and meet potential influences that can help spread the word about your business. Attend networking events for those in your industry, social meet-ups for small businesses and conferences. All of these will help you widen your network and help get yourself out there as well as your business. Bear in mind that you yourself are a brand also and this has a direct influence on your company.

The Paid way – If you have some money to spend, putting it into a marketing budget can help you branch out. Whether you spend on marketing online, offline or both depends on your business. A local restaurant may use both local newspaper ads and Google local ads. A software firm may use only online advertising in the form of PPC (pay per click) such as Google adwords or may pay for banner placement on a targeted website.

This can help get your product/service seen by many people but may not always be effective in terms of ROI especially on a small budget. Online marketing is much more quantifiable but depends on more factors than the ads, converting visitors to your site is the most important aspect.

Last but not least, make sure you have an elevator pitch. A 30 second summary of what need your business fills, with what you offer and the benefits that that will be given. You never know when you might bump in to a potential customer or someone who can benefit you and your business.

The above are just some ways that you can gain your first customers, any other ways let me know in the comments.

Remember even if you don’t like sales, to be a successful entrepreneur you will need to be able to sell.

Sarah Prevette founder of Sprouter!

Sarah Prevette founder of Sprouter

Sarah Prevette is the founder of Sprouter, a collaboration tool for entrepreneurs where they can share knowledge and communicate with other entrepreneurs.

So what is so unique about it? Well it is focused towards expanding the network of entrepreneurs specifically. The primary aim is to connect with those you do not know, rather than other applications which are either socially focused or mainly about maintaining relationships with people you were already connected to.

This is not Sarah’s first start up, she also founded upinion.com, a tween pop culture community. She found it more of a struggle not having entrepreneurial peers around her and so this was the bases for Redwire which rebranded as Sprouter in 2009. It also now takes on a Twitter like format where users can only use 140 characters. Sprouter currently has over 15,000 users and is rapidly growing.

Sarah is also a bit of a philantrapist and she helps spearhead the ‘Twestival Toronto’ event every year. It is an event which brings together Twitter communities from around the as part of a fundraising initiative. Twestivals are held in many locations and Sarah’s Twestival in Toronto raised $20,000 of the $460,000 total.

Sarah’s favourite thing about being an entrepreneur ‘is the privilege of spending each moment of your life working on your passion.’

Some advice from Sarah for budding entrepreneurs, well first of all, “Just go for it”, take the leap, you have to take the risk to have a chance of making it big.

Also “you are going to fail, just know that and accept it before you start!”

You will always come across problems but learn from it and adapt, nothing goes to plan, but the quicker you adapt to change the more successful you will be and it is the same whether you are working 9 -5 or you have your own start up.

“Isolation Kills” is another piece of advice from Sarah. In other words take advice, bounce ideas, get opinions, ask questions, people are a valuable resource so use them, they want to give their opinions, you never know it might be useful!

Sarah has expanded her team to four and they will no doubt grow larger in the future as Sprouters popularity picks up more and more.

soraya-darabi

Soraya Darabi is the founder of social networking food site Foodspotting. The site lets you find and upload specific dishes as opposed to restaurants. Foodspotting allows you to take a picture of the dish you’re eating and upload it to the website as well as giving you a chance to find some interesting dishes when visiting someplace new.

Soraya seeks her success through social media as shown by her career to date.

Soraya founded Foodspotting less than a year ago (at the time of writing), in December 2009 and has seen rapid growth on the website. The site is one that can only get better, as the more people join the more enriched range of foods and locations will be available. Foodspotting is great for casual and passionate users and has a twitter style follow option as well as a points system.

Prior to Foodspotting a 23 year old Darabi found herself with a job at The NY Times where she implemented social media integration for The NY times including a presence on Facebook and Twitter. Her social media prowess led her to winning first prize at the INMA Awards for excellence in marketing.

This determined young entrepreneur is pushing the way forward for other young female entrepreneurs, “We need more young women starting companies” she says, and with over half a million followers on twitter there are plenty of people listening.

Soraya was given the accolade of 53rd place in the top 100 most creative people in business 2010 list. She is the social media queen and always seems to know where the social media trends are, why?

“I get information from my peers,” Darabi says simply.

Art student to programmer Leah Culver – One to Watch

Leah Culver

Leah Culver is a young female entrepreneur currently residing in San Francisco. She was a co-founder and lead developer of the site Pownce at the age of 24. This was a free social networking and micro blogging site, launched in July 2007.

The launch was covered by big names such as Wired, Business Week and Webware. Pownce was subsequently acquired by blog juggernaut SixApart at the end of 2008.

She stayed on with SixApart till February 2010 when she announced she was stepping down to develop an iphone application for Plancast. Plancast allows users to make location based plans for sharing via Facebook and Twitter.

Leah started out studying art at Minnesota University, but found her programming through a requisite programming class. After graduating in 2006 she worked at a couple of start ups before deciding to create Pownce which she built from scratch.

Her extensive programming skills meant her web site was relatively cheap, since she could do it all herself. She raised any funds that she needed from her friends and family.

“As a programmer the route to your own company is easy; you build a site and get people excited about it,” says Culver.

In 2008 Leah was named one of Fast Company’s Most Influential Women in Web 2.0. She likes new challenges and is always looking forward to help develop further technologies.

She showed her natural innovation when in 2006 she planned to update her 6 year old computer with a nice new shiny MacBook Pro. To raise money for the purchase of a new laptop she sold advertising space which would be laser etched onto the top. She sold space for $50 a go and also offered to buy a drink for anyone who contributed $30 or more.

She is currently working on a new site called Leafy Chat. Watch this space!

Twitter users to get integrated retweet button

The carbon footprint of Twitter users is set to be dramatically reduced after the social networking site began integrating a simple “retweet” button to save users having to exert the extra energy necessary to type the letters “RT”.

Retweeting is when users can share interesting tweets made by people they follow, with their own following, using the syntax RT.

Sony have lunched their first netbook pc.
It is apparently the only part of the pc market showing significant growth at the moment.
The new sony net book has only a 10” screen but has a resolution of 1366 by 768 pixels, by having such a high resolution, user would have to scroll less.

Facebook and new privacy settings!!!

Facebook will be allowing its members to set and adjust their privacy settings for any piece of content they post on the site.

The changes follow the recent announcement of new settings for publishing content that allow you to choose to post items that everyone, not just your friends, can see. Many see both moves in part as Facebook’s attempt to blunt the rapid rise of microblogging service Twitter.
